Engaging Kingdom Keys for Fruitful Living – Matthew 16:13-19

“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom; and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”

This statement from Jesus’ mouth is a very loaded one. It is also very relevant to contemporary Christians. Embedded in this statement are the fundamental operational principles of the kingdom of God which every candidate of the kingdom must understand, explore and exploit in order to live an enviable life on earth.

The issue of the kingdom of God is well stressed in the word of God, particularly in the New Testament. When Jesus came to the world, He taught explicitly about the kingdom of God and what obtains there as well as its secrets using several parables with the aim of helping humanity to be partakers of the blessings therein.

However, as the disciples could have found it difficult to grasp the fullest understanding of the mystery Jesus was placing on their hands in their days, so it is possible for some contemporary believers to be living in ignorance of the fundamentals of this glorious kingdom they belong to. It is not unlikely to find some Christians still struggling with some issues of life today that requires kingdom intervention for immediate solution. But because of the ignorance of the operational principles of how to gain access to divine providence through the application of the kingdom keys, they have remained perpetually “outside” suffering like the senior brother of the prodigal son, who for many years was ignorant of the truth that all that his father has was actually his (Luke 15:25-31).

There is need therefore to have an understanding of the nature of the kingdom Jesus was referring to in our text, the nature and meaning of the keys and how to make a right application of these keys.
